5.0 out of 5 stars Backhaus, 6 Jan 2007

(REAL NAME)
There has been a revival (or better a belated recognition) of Wilhelm Backhaus's artistry in the USA. On continental Europe there has never been any doubt that Backhaus, with Artur Schnabel, Edwin Fischer, Claudio Arrau, Egon Petri and a handful of others has been one of the greatest interpreters of the Classics (Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart)in the xxth century. It is also been recognized that he was a marvellous interpreter of Liszt, Mendelssohn, Schumann and above all Chopin. In the UK Backhaus is still very often (fortunately not always) dismissed as having a too direct and brusque stile, occasionally characterised by a gruff good humour but lacking in sensitivity and depth. What a bunch of utter nonsense!!! Recently a sententious music critic - with a bad habit of publishing the same article with only modest variations (and not for the best)- on a famous British music magazine has high handely affirmed that Backhaus trivialises the arietta of op.111. Among all the pianists, musicians and music lovers I know (and I know quite a few)this boutade has raised hilarity and conempt. Nevertheles this or similar ctitisism of Backhaus's pianism is often raised in British magazines. Of course any time without any clear explanation to justify the claim. What we get is the supreme judgment os the appointed "great" music critic. To the poor Bristish music lovers what is left is: either to make an act of faith and believe the supreme taste and judgment of these critics or to forget about them and try listening to Backhaus by themselves without prejudices. The 2nd option is clearly preferable: more honest and more intelligent. If they will take this route, probably 80 % of them will discover a supreme artist. I encourage anyone to listen to Backhaus's interpretation of Beethoven's sonata no.29 in B flat major, op.106 ( so called Hammerklavier)in this box set. The way in which he can hold together the whole of the sonata, subtly revealing its internal unities and so letting this gigantic work develop as a living organism, is magisterial. The way in which the impetus generated by the fortissimo opening chord in B flat melts in the following changes in harmony, is achieved via a magestirial use of almost imperceptible tempo changes. A use of rubato which reflects a deep understanding of the harmonic structure of the text. It is not sheer emotion which leads to the application of rubato, but the analysis of sound realationships which leads to use rubato as a tool to reveal sentiments: not flamboyant emotionalism but deep search of emotions. Please listen to the sound generated in the adagio sostenuto whith its difficult variations in sonority. The implicit indication of Beethoven is magestirially fulfilled as only a restricted group of great masters (Arrau, Petri, Richter, Schnabel) can do. Beauty of sound in itself is meaningless, but beauty of sound to achieve musical meaning is a rare gift.
Please go back to Backhaus and listen carefully: Backhaus is a giant.
